June 3, 10, 17, 24 | Intro to Oil Painting with Allison Day
Four Consecutive Tuesday Evenings | June 3, 10, 17, 24 | 6-8pm
Learn to paint like the masters! Join visiting artist and educator, Allison Day, for an intro to oil painting class to learn the basics of this time-honored medium. Participants will complete a new painting each week while learning the basic principles and techniques of oil painting (as described below in more detail) .
Week 1 (Tuesday, 6/3):
Focus: Materials, Color mixing, Underpainting, Fat Over Lean (proper layering of oil paint)
We will paint one 5x7 landscape on canvas paper using a limited pallet to work with value.
Week 2 (Tuesday, 6/10)
Focus: Light and Shadow, Value
We will paint one 8x10 floral still life on canvas paper focusing on light and shadow.
Week 3 (Tuesday, 6/17):
Focus: Pallet Knives, Broad Strokes, Blending
We will paint one 8x10 seascape on canvas paper using pallet knives.
Week 4 (Tuesday, 6/24):
Focus: Impasto Technique
Each student will bring their own landscape reference photo and we will work using impasto techniques to paint it on 8x10 or 11x14 (student preference) canvas. Students will use skills we have learned and practice throughout the course, interpreting their reference photo for their painting.
Experience level: Beginner
