Winter Drawing Series with Sarah Rosenthal

$49.00

Thursdays | 6-8PM | 1/16/25 - 2/20/25

Join Sarah Rosenthal in learning basic drawing skills. Each class will focus on a particular drawing skill that will culminate in drawing a still life drawing. If you have taken a class with Sarah before, you can contact her to learn what classes will be repetitive from what you may have learned before.

Materials:

Although we have what you need to use in the studio, you may want to work on your drawing in between classes.

Here is a suggested list of supplies that would be helpful for the class and future drawing projects:

Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100 Series Pencils  2B, HB, 2H (I would suggest getting 2 of each: one for line work and the other for shading)

Staedtler Mars Plastic Eraser (or equivalent by another brand)

Kneaded eraser - any kind

Sandpaper block (this sharpens drawing pencils to get a sharper point than achieved by a regular sharpener)

Canson Universal Sketch Pad (9x12 in) This is my favorite sketch pad. It is smooth and picks up eraser marks well. It is my go to sketch pad at a reasonable price. You can also use a different brand of your choice, but size of paper should be 9"x12" or larger.

Ages high school through adults welcome

No experience necessary!

Class 1: Let's Learn To Draw: Basics of contour drawing and drawing pencils

Students will learn the different range of drawing pencils and how to use them. We will create a contour drawing of a winter gourd learning to draw what we see rather than what we think we see.

Class 2: Showing a sense of Depth in Drawing: Hatching, Cross Hatching, Stippling:

Students will learn to make 2-D images look 3-D by learning different drawing techniques.

Class 3: Shading a Circle into an Orb

Students will learn shading techniques. They will learn about different types of pencils and when and how to use them to enhance their drawings. Students will practice shading techniques and work on creating a three dimensional object in the process.

Class 4: Perspective: How we draw objects in relation to each other and show depth.

We will learn how to draw things on a plane so that we can get a sense of space. Afterward, students will begin drawing a still life of their choice. Although not necessary, students can bring 3-5 small items from home to be the subjects of the still life. This will allow them to continue the drawing at home if not finished during the class time.

Class 5: Composition of a Still Life*

This class  will focus on how to make your drawing pleasing to the eye by understanding some basic ideas of composition. We will  create quick sketches until we determine a composition that looks best.  Students will draw a contour drawing of their still life building on what they learned in earlier classes.

Class 6: Tying it all Together *

Students will continue their drawings from the previous week. Now that they have completed the contour drawing, they will start to add depth by either shading, or using a different drawing technique of choice.

Class 5 and 6 will be working on the same subject. If you are not able to attend class 5; please talk with the instructor ahead of time to be prepared for class 6.
